Professional writing to me is the writing that you prepare for your future employers. It is writing memorandums and cover letters that correlate with the desired job application. Also it involves tailoring your resume to be up to date and to be easy to understand, along with appealing to the eyes. I now know that sometimes white space is a good thing when it comes to a resume and memo letters.

Throughout this semester we were given projects that made us look into the hiring job industry and researching our desired career. Before this course I never really thought about cover letters or “memo” pages; I thought I would only need a good resume and recommendation letters to land me a job.  Well that and also a video reel of my work at the news station to show my experience. This course has broadened my knowledge of how to write professionally and how to tailor my writing to the desired job that I am seeking.

Writing in my prospective professional field is very important. It is a different type of writing though. Writing for television is short, conversational, and easy for the average audience member to understand. I have actually found myself having to “dumb things down” and shorten my scripts for my projects at my internship. Writing is everything in my field. It not only is on the teleprompter for the anchors, it’s also used for closed captioning which everyone is able to see at home if they fix their television.

This course has greatly prepared me for after graduation. I now know what I need to apply for jobs, and how to look up jobs and research them. I also know how to format my applications in a job packet;  memo, cover letter, resume and references form.

After I graduate I plan on going to graduate school while working out in my field. Since I am going to get my masters in education, I figure it would just be easier to work in the field of broadcasting while in school.

Overall I feel as though this course has greatly prepared me for the real world of professional writing and when apply to jobs or graduate school.
